Wherefore Solomon not without cause, called this endeavor of knowledge, A consuming and affliction of the spirit: for knowledge sometime breedeth unto us disquietness. For the more men do understand, the more things they see that do displease them, wherewith they are aggrieved.

Peter Martyr Vermigli, The Common Places

In the arena

What are you consuming? Knowledge has a way of multiplying your discontentment. The more you read, the more you see wrong with the world, with your church, with your neighbors. Every book can open a new grievance. Every social media post can disquiet your spirit in an unhealthy way. That restlessness can eat you alive if you let it.

Ecclesiastes 12:12 warns that much study is a weariness of the flesh, and the remedy follows in verse 13: fear God and keep his commandments. Be watchful over what you consume, but then do something. Let your reading drive you to gratitude and obedience, not to grumbling. Go on a social media fast for a week, and see if you notice a difference.
