The sweetest comforts of this life, they are but like treasures of snow; now do but take a handful of snow, and crush it in your hands, and it will melt away presently; but if you let it lie upon the ground, it will continue for some time. And so it is with the contentments of this world; if you grasp them in your hands and lay them too near your hearts, they will quickly melt and vanish away; but if you will not hold them too fast in your hands, nor lay them too close to your hearts, they will abide the longer with you.
In the arena
Grip your comforts tightly and they dissolve. Hold them loosely, understanding that you aren't owed even a single breath, and they last.
Pick one good thing in your life you've been clutching. It could be your job, a relationship, your health, your savings. Open your hands and pray over it. Out loud, say: "This is yours, Lord. I receive it as a gift, not a right." Then thank God for it specifically. Name what you're grateful for and why.
The moment you treat a gift like a possession, you start losing it. It begins to shift to an idol. Gratitude keeps your hands open. And open hands receive more than clenched fists ever could.
