To despise what someone considers excellent is an offense to them, but to value, esteem, and hold in high regard what is esteemed by me is pleasing to me. What does Christ say? 'My Father loves you because you loved me' (John 16:27). Those who hold Christ in high esteem are likewise held in high esteem by the Father.

In the arena

Pick one thing that honors Christ and make it obvious. Open your Bible at the coffee shop. Mention what God did for you this week in a conversation you'd normally keep shallow. Visit a nursing home or organize a singing there. Something. Anything. No need to Jesus juke, but no need to shy away from the topic either. Esteeming Christ is not an abstract exercise. It is Christ on your lips, in your schedule, in your spending. Romans 10:11 says that everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. If you hold him in high regard, you have nothing to hide.

And the next time someone comes to you excited about something, whether friend, child, or brother, be excited with them. Esteem what they esteem, and rejoice when they rejoice. It costs you nothing.
